Everyday I talk to women about intimate apparel, body size, body image and beauty. Not a day goes by that someone doesn’t mention their weight, and how getting rid of it is the “thing” that will allow them to do what they want to do, go where they want to go, or chase after something they want. I’ve heard it from women of all ages – young and old. Women of all sizes – thin and curvy, and women of all races.
Recently, Glamour Magazine held their annual Women of the Year awards. Robin Roberts from ABC’s Good Morning America said it best: “As you age, it’s the things you don’t do that you regret, not the things that you do.”
Here’s the good news (and the truth): Your weight, your dress size, your shape – they are NOT the determining factor in your life. Your self-confidence is not built or destroyed on whether you’re a pear, a triangle or an hourglass (Who made these up anyway? They’re ridiculous). One of my favorite quotes is this:
“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
Now, here are some quick, simple and practical ways to immediately jump-start your confidence:
Don’t go to the mall and get fitted by some clueless sixteen year-old girl with no experience (probably wearing pants that say “PINK” on her rear end). Go to a real bra boutique – an old school bra fitter. These women know-their-stuff and will most likely know your bra size from across the room. It’s an art, and if done right you will instantly look and feel better than you have in years. Get something fun – you have a million nude and black bras. Buy something lacey or colorful – it will put a spring in your step! Want to banish back fat or increase your cup size? There are bras that do that too - and these pros can help you choose the best one for you.
New clothes can make you feel like you can conquer the world. When you look good, you feel good. A trendy new top paired with some classic pieces can add instant pizzazz to a wardrobe that has been neglected. Can’t pull one together on your own? Start following a great fashion blogger or celebrity stylist for inspiration – sometimes they even show you budget friendly alternatives to their favorite high end looks. Mimic an outfit that you love and voila…your style, and that old swagger you remember, is back!
Sometimes women get stuck in a rut and the next thing they know they’ve been wearing the same hairstyle for 10 years. I was totally guilty of it. I recently cut off all of my hair and it was so liberating. I was so nervous to cut it – worried my husband wouldn’t like it or I would look older, but the opposite happened. My husband couldn’t keep his hands off of me and I looked years younger. I think I was holding onto my long hair like a security blanket, and it was preventing me from doing something great for myself.
If you’re hesitant to cut it all off like I did, try side swept bangs or a long bob. Check out this chic cut – cute right? These minor changes will give you an instant update and take your look to the next level in a matter of minutes.
Check out the make-up counter at your local department store and spruce up your make-up routine. Learning some new tips and tricks can modernize your look with minimal effort. A make-up expert can introduce you to new colors, products and tools that you may never have tried before - you might even end up with flawless skin, cheeks that glow and eyes that pop! Who wouldn’t want that?!
I recently purchased Coach’s Legacy perfume. I swear, every time I wear it someone asks me what I’m wearing and how nice it smells - it always makes me feel good. It’s amazing how just a simple little compliment from someone can make your day.
Confidence is key – if you can get it with just a few easy steps, you’re on your way!
Be beautiful. Be confident. Regret nothing.
